A fluorescent lamp, or fluorescent tube, is a low pressure mercury vapor gas discharge lamp that uses fluorescence to produce visible light. An electric current in the gas excites mercury vapor, which produces short wave ultraviolet light that then causes a phosphor coating on the inside of the lamp to glow.A fluorescent lamp converts electrical energy into useful light much more efficiently ...Don Klipstein Don's homepage!

Fluorescent lamps use a ballast which transforms line voltage to a voltage to start up and operate the lamp(s). Newer fluorescent ballasts are usually rated for both 120 volts and 277 volts.Lighting
Forms of lighting Indoor lighting. Forms of lighting include alcove lighting, which like most other uplighting is indirect. This is often done with fluorescent lighting (first available at the 1939 World's Fair) or rope light, occasionally with neon lighting, and recently with LED strip lighting. It is a form of backlighting. The Ballast When a fluorescent lamp begins conducting electricity, the gas inside grows warmer. As the gas heats, the electrical resistance of the gas goes down, allowing more current to flow, which will make the gas even hotter, which allows even more current. How to Replace the Ballast in a Fluorescent Lighting Fixture
All fluorescent light fixtures consist of at least lamp(s), lamp holders, ballast and internal wiring. Some older types have "starters", too. The ballast is used to create the voltage and current necessary to start and illuminate the fluorescent lamp. In time, the ballast may need to be replaced.SURE LITES FBP 2 40 HU Cooper Industries
INSTALLATION NOTE: Make sure the necessary branch circuit wiring is available. An unswitched source of power is required. The emergency ballast must be fed from the same branch circuit as the AC ballast.Electrical Symbols: Lighting Symbols Ask The Electrician
This list of lighting symbols will help you to identify these devices on the electrical blueprint or wiring diagram layout.
